The Chief Directorate: Pollution and Waste Management is proud to announce that the Department of Environmental Affairs is planning to conduct (9) provincial road shows on the tentative dates listed below.

The Minister recently hosted the 1st Waste Management Officers Conference the 15-16 September 2010, the Waste Khoro, which targeted mainly government participants namely; national government departments, provincial departments of local government and environment as well as local government. The Department would like to take this time and thank you for your participation and contribution to this historical event. The next plan is to have provincial road shows which will aim at popularising the Waste Act, as well as give the Department a platform to engage with the wider stakeholders on the different provisions of the Waste Act. This process will enhance the smooth implementation of the Act as well as create awareness on the Act.

The Waste Act came into effect on 1 July 2009 and the Department is taking this opportunity to create awareness, share information with the general public and involve the media extensively in profiling the Act.

The Giant Match Project:

This new and unique show was initiated in the context of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Set in Johannesburg over a period of six weeks between 28 April and 10 June, the creative residency involved over one hundred South African artists from underprivileged communities and 17 artists from the French collective Les Grandes Personnes. The project consisted first of a writing workshop during which the artists revisited Romeo & Juliet and adapted this universal story to their very own South African background, then followed a creative workshop which saw the making of giant puppets, characters and objects fitting in the story. Tailor-made on the scale of South African townships and neighbourhoods, this larger-than-life show toured South Africa for a month between 11 June and 11 July and was performed in public spaces and communities in Gauteng and beyond.

Since then the show has already been invited to take part in the framework of various events including the Bastille Day festivities in Kigali, Rwanda, BASA Awards Ceremony in Johannesburg, activations for the Danone Nation’s cup in Gauteng…

Street theatre seems particularly well fitted to South Africa, as it provides an opportunity to claim back public spaces and bring visual and performing arts together in areas in which they are seldom seen.

While still at Be Green, our good friend Rudi from Green Planet Recycling organised that the puppets were made from their plastic. The puppets are 100% recycled plastic and he organised and sponsored it. A big thumbs up to him!
